THE MAN IN THE RED BANDANA

Empire Hook & Ladder Volunteer Fire Company & The New Jersey and New York Volunteer Firemen's Association salutes and honors firefighter WELLES CROWTHER.

Welles Crowther was a volunteer firefighter like his dad.

On September 11, 2001 Welles was working as an equities trader above the impact area on the 104th floor of the South Tower at the World Trade Center.

Utilizing his experience and training as a firefighter, he placed his trademark red bandana over his mouth and nose and discovered a way down a stairway despite the fire, smoke and devastation to the building. Welles was able to rescue numerous civilians by going down then back up three times. When his remains were located, he was with a group of FDNY members.

What many did not know was Welles was planning on joining the FDNY. His application was found at his residence after his death. On December 15, 2006, Welles Crowther was made an Honorary Member of the FDNY by Fire Commissioner Nicholas Scoppetta and Fire Chief Salvatore Cassano.

Its with pride, honor & tradition the New Jersey & New York Volunteer Firemen's Association will add WELLES CROWTHER to our Firefighters Memorial Monument. Welles will be joining his fellow brothers on the wall. Welles and his brothers have unselfishly given their lives so their fellow man can live on.
